What was the problem?

The old Tuner page was heavily used but overwhelmed with clutter and too many competing elements. We ran a focused user research study and found clear opportunities to simplify the experience without losing its core features.

Research

We began by conducting a moderated usability study with 10 participants across desktop and mobile. Several issues quickly surfaced: the page had over a dozen CTAs, and users often didn’t realize the page continued beyond the tuner section, especially on mobile. The tuner itself occasionally failed to detect the correct string, and lacked support for alternate tunings

Insights

• Many users didn't scroll because there was no clear visual cue prompting them to do so.

• The abundance of buttons created friction, making it harder for users to focus.

• Users loved the visual design of the tuner but wished the notes would hold longer, and desired more clarity in how to use the tool,

Design decisions

We reduced the number of CTAs, simplified the content hierarchy, and restructured the narrative flow of the page. We also introduced clearer button labels and improved sectioning to guide users toward key features, such as chord libraries, genre-based song pages, and app benefits.

Testing

Follow-up testing confirmed that the streamlined experience led to better navigation, increased discovery of additional features, and higher satisfaction among both beginners and advanced users. A key validation? Users were more likely to scroll, engage with the tuner, and explore content below the fold.

Solutions

The result was a cleaner, more intuitive interface that makes tuning easy and introduces users to our app in a more structured way. This redesign reduced friction and aligned better with both user needs and business goals.

Reflections

This project reminded me just how valuable user research is when it comes to validating intuition. I had a strong hunch about what was wrong with the page, but hearing directly from users helped confirm it, and sharpen it. From there, I was able to design with clarity and purpose, test what mattered, and ultimately deliver a solution that made a real difference.
